The Gloucestershire branch’s annual golf competition, held on 25th June, raised a record £29,504 for EEIBA funds. A full entry list of 100 players from 19 supporting organisations enjoyed the event in fine weather at the Lilley Brook Golf Club, Cheltenham. Peter Neumann, past chairman of the organising team, led the field away with guests, Club Vice-Captain Steve Balster and Martin Austick of BNS Nuclear Services. The golf activities were followed by a splendid dinner after which prizes were presented. British Energy was again the major sponsor and organiser of the event. Six other power industry companies generously gave additional sponsorship this year. AMEC, Atkins, BNS Nuclear Services, Doosan Babcock Energy, Jacobs and Weir Power & Industrial sponsored various aspects of the competition including provision and presentation of prizes. A number of other companies kindly sponsored holes and provided prizes for a raffle. The Lilley Brook course, as always, was in very good condition and competition was close with some excellent scores posted. Overall winner of the stableford competition with 43 points was Rob Harris from Budget Car and Van Rental. Richard Sargent of Atkins was runner-up. Steve Newport won the best scratch score competition with a round of 72. The team competition was won by Tony Vearncombe, Chris Vearncombe and Nick Hitchman. The prize giving dinner rounded off the day’s proceedings. Malcolm Twist, Chairman of the organising committee, thanked the players and sponsors for their support and their help in raising such an exceptional figure. He also paid tribute to his committee, others who helped on the day, and to the Lilley Brook Golf Club, for their part in making the event such a success. Representatives of the main sponsors then presented the prizes to the competition winners. Rob Harris was unable to attend the dinner to receive his prize in person, but he was congratulated for his performance and will hold the ‘Gloucester Electric Cup’ for the next twelve months. Thoughts are now turning to next year’s event which will again be held at the Lilley Brook Club. The next Gloucestershire branch event is the Annual Ball on Friday 13th November.
